Lessons We've Learned from Speakers over 2020

What was your most important takeaway from the speakers you have heard this year?

I've chosen to reflect on a few of the speakers we've welcomed to TEC groups in 2020 and highlighted my key learnings from the messages delivered. It is also fascinating to note that despite many of them being on Zoom and in a time of COVID, the messages are timeless.

It is possible you may not have seen all of the below listed speakers of course but worth reflecting on your own notes. What are you implementing in your business or leadership style as a result?

The Second Digital Revolution with Tim Levy. Tim reminded us of the importance of video and the artificial intelligence targeting algorithms utilised by the social media giants - the need to pay something rather than just be found.

Social Media & Digital Strategy with Tim Martin was for the KEY group. Tim's one page handout on mapping out any digital marketing campaign is still worth its weight in gold.

For those who signed up to Grant Leboff's "Sticky Marketing" session this emphasised that COVID has just accelerated trends in the role digital marketing has in the buying journey.

"Navigating & Negotiating Through Challenging Times" with Wayne Harrison was Wayne's second session of year building on his flagship session "From Hope to Strategy." The big takeaway from both sessions was "what is the other side's victory speech?" and in a COVID world what is the opportunity to re-negotiate?

"Creating a Mentally Healthy Workplace" with Sarah Cleasby reminded us that depression has as much of a damaging impact on an individual as some forms of cancer; a memorable discussion was had in the groups as to how management could handle the difference between genuine mental health issues and people hiding behind that excuse. The debate on that one continues...

"Flexible working - Optimising the Present and Cultivating the Future" with Maja Paleka helped us reflect on some of the positive lessons from the changes COVID has had on our working habits and she encouraged us to all work out what we'd keep doing, start doing and of course stop doing in a more flexible working regime.

"Agile Sales - Delivering Customer Journeys of Value and Delight" with Brad Jeavons allowed us to focus on the sales process as a buying journey and business process just like any other - for which Agile and Lean approaches can be used.

"Building back better after business disruption" with Matt Tice built on Matt's flagship Insurgence talk. His quote "This is the best time to be in business" with a characteristic licking of lips leads the way for a TEC member business.

The message from Warren Hogan in "The Economic Landscape" about the medium term resilience of the Australian economy reinforced the messages given by Roger Martin-Fagg, the UK behavioural economist that the global government stimulus, even in a protracted COVID lockdown means that predictions of another great depression are totally off the mark.

It is worth reflecting as we in Australia bounce back to a normal world but with international borders closed, what have these speakers really brought to your thinking for next year?
